Life
after Glenbard West took me to the Stout State campus of the University
of Wisconsin. During my sophomore year a knee injury relegated me
to the role of being the football team's representative to the Homecoming
committee. It was at that committee that I met my wife Cindy. After
graduating from Wisconsin I signed on with General Motors and Cindy
began a teaching career. Seven relocations, two children (Michelle,
33, and Brian, 29) and two grandchildren (Katie, 9, and Samantha,
2) later, we landed and remain in the Detroit area. Cindy teaches
middle school in Walled Lake, Michigan and I am currently responsible
for production scheduling and retail distribution of the Chevrolet
Corvette, Cadillac XLR and Cadillac DeVille. Hopefully my next responsibility
will be to enjoy retirement.
A
notable career highlight is one of steering GM into increased involvement
in racing programs. As you can imagine, instituting that kind of
change within GM is a slow and difficult process, but the results
have been worth the effort. I may never make the Motorsports Hall
of Fame but my involvement has been highlighted in Autoweek, On
Track, and Speed Sport News magazines.
When
not tinkering with one of my cars, other hobbies I enjoy are woodworking
and furniture building as well as exercising and bicycling. I am
quite proud of recently completely my 15th 150 mile bike ride as
a Multiple Sclerosis fundraiser and bringing my cumulative total
collections for MS to almost $30,000.

| I
graduated from Loyola University of Chicago in 1968 with a B.A. in
history. Following graduation, I was in the Peace Corps in Nigeria
for two years where I taught history and English in a secondary school.
In 1972, I moved to California and started law school at Northrop
University. I attended law school in the evening and taught history
at a Catholic girls high school in south central Los Angeles during
the day. I graduated in 1976. After being admitted to the bar, I worked
for 23 years as a staff attorney with four Legal Aid offices in the
Los Angeles area. In 1983, I met my wife, another legal aid attorney.
We married in 1989. I have been a staff counsel with the California
State Department of Social Services since 2001. |

The
term "spent" seems, as we approach 60, an apt term. Was
that intentional?
After
graduating from Glenbard, after attending DePaw, after protesting
the war (and now finding myself doing it again), after settling
into the life I was expected to live -- a marriage with two lovely,
and now nearly grown adopted kids -- after finding one career after
another, first in the ministry, which proved a mistake, then a hitch
with Head Start, from there to drug and alcohol education that lead
to being an elementary principal and now has resolved into teaching
high school and college English, doing the thing I love most, writing,
I have settled into a career as a writer. In 1994, newly divorced,
I came out, met my partner, and moved in with him. In 2001, I got
a degree I covet, an MFA in poetry from Vermont College. I am as
active as I have ever been. My sons love golf as much as I do and
can, on occasion, beat me. I teach at a community college and am
part of a writers community in Portland. I am getting a second book
of poems published. I regularly do reviews for several journals,
both here and in England.
I
have a new book of poems that just came out called The Knot, the
title poem will be published in the Puckerbrush Review, Summer/fall,
2006. My book was published by Snow Drift books and can be order
fromt Smyle Books, 8 Cole Street, Falmouth, Maine 04105 fort $10.00.
I garden and bicycle, stay mostly here in Vacationland because it
is just that: miles from the traffic jams, quiet, unconventional.
We
welcome any old friends to visit, put their heels up and talk about
the Midwest.

I
married in 1965 to a class member of 1961, Ed McComb. After his
stint in the Navy and Vietnam, we moved to Minnesota because one
of us liked to fish. After living and working here for 35 years
or so, I'm proud to call Minnesota home. Two daughters were born
here and also procreated here. I proudly bear the name “Grandy”
to five gorgeous grandchildren ranging in age from nine to six and
they are all “above average” as anyone who lives near
Lake Wobegone can attest.
I've
worked for many years in local school districts helping middle and
high schoolers learn the proper use of our native language and otherwise
utilizing the excellent educational skills drilled into me by Glenbard's
finest -- especially Miss McConnell who taught me journalistic skills
that most college grads apparently do not have. I currently am secretary/assistant
to the Spring Lake Park (Minnesota) school district community services
department and assist six different “bosses” –
all younger than I am – with whatever they need, but especially,
proofing/editing all publications, of which there are many.
I
am divorced and caring for my mother in my home. After being widowed
three years ago she moved in with me and had a small stroke about
a year ago which wiped out her short-term memory. We both belong
to a local Red Hat Society so are out and about having fun all the
time, but I'm the only one who remembers any of it! We are also
subscribers to touring Broadway theater productions – Minneapolis
has a fabulous entertainment reputation – so I sometimes seem
to be always going somewhere. I'm actually looking forward to “slowing
down” but it doesn't seem to be on the horizon yet. I do plan
on retiring in about eight years but, as usual, have made no real
plans for “after working.” Guess I'll just play it by
ear and see how it goes – I've not been disappointed so far.

My
life has been so full, complex, and unconventional since '64 I hardly
know to where to start. Right now I am self-employed as a tax consultant.
This is , about my 6th or 7 th"career" ( I have lost count).
My passions include sustainability, voluntary simplicity, socially
responsible investing, multimedia productions for Internet Publication,
computers, writing, cogent conversation, and (get this) skilled
dancing to upbeat happy music.
A
confluence of factors over the last decade took me away from difficult
to detect neurological hearing and visual handicaps; these I came
to understand plagued me over the course of my education and most
of my life. With that resolution, starting at around age 55, I became
a very late bloomer. As a friend once quipped, "Better late
than never."
