Since the last reunion, I have worked seven years in London for GlaxoSmithKline in deal-making strategic planning and global marketing V.P. roles for prescription and over the counter drugs. October 1 I return to my office and home in the Philadelphia area and November 1 I go on sabbatical.

Since Glenbard West, I gained a B.S., M.S. (engineering) and an M.B.A. and worked for Proctor & Gamble during the first 15 years. Then I joined McKinsey & Co, ultimately co-leading the pharmaceutical practice as a partner. For the last dozen years at GlaxoSmithKline I have managed innovation and new product development across many healthcare areas.

During these years I married and divorced – no children. The sabbatical is for an “activation” phase to focus on longed-for activities such as photography, family history (in Scotland), languages and travel.

My home base will be Ambler, Pennsylvania with a mountain home in Colorado near sister, Joan (class of 1968) and maybe a bolt hole in London if the pound descends from record highs.

Along the way the family and friends circle has grown but I always have valued the enduring links with about a half dozen Glenbarders.

After leaving Glenbard West, I earned my B.A. in sociology and psychology and my teacher’s certification for secondary education from Michigan State University. Shortly after graduating, I married my husband, Warren, to whom I have been married for 35 years. During that time, Warren and I have been fortunate to have been able to travel to many parts of the world including Europe and Asia. We have also raised two wonderful daughters, Kathy and Jennifer, and we will soon become grandparents for the first time.

My career has been in education. I have spent the last 23 years teaching children with learning disabilities and other special needs. In 2001 I was honored with the Naperville Jaycee Distinguished Service Award in Education. In 2002 I received a “Those Who Excel” award from my school district and was chosen to be the district’s nominee for the State of Illinois “Those Who Excel” award in the team category. I have always loved working with special needs children and hope to continue for a long time to come.

After spending many years working for the Northern Trust Company and the law firm of Schiff, Hardin & Waite in the world of estates and trusts, I accepted a position with First Citizens Bank & Trust Company in North Carolina as a Vice President with the responsibility of estate settlement for the western half of the state. So in the fall of 1999 we left Glen Ellyn and moved to Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville is located in the mountains of western North Carolina and has been named by various publications as one of the best places to retire or live, the “freakiest” city east of the Mississippi and the “Paris of the South.” On any given day it is all those things and more.

We spend our leisure time going to antique auctions or art shows, white water rafting and traveling. I am also trying to reinvent my golf game to deal with the mountainous terrain of our club course. We have a condominium in St. Pete Beach, Florida and try to take time to work on my goal of becoming a beach bum when I grow up.

My daughters Amy and Merry both graduated from West and believe it or not had some of the same teachers we had. Amy lives in Brandon, Florida and has a son, Sean, age five. Merry lives in Asheville and has a daughter, Mabel, age four. I also have a stepdaughter, Erica.

I graduated from Ripon College, Ripon, Wisconsin and went to work in Milwaukee for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance, then Allstate Insurance where I met my husband and settled in Waukesha. Had a son, Scott, who died of leukemia at age five. Moved to Michigan for a year, then settled in Libertyville, Illinois where I have lived since 1981. Began my banking career as a teller and have moved up through the ranks at several banks. Through a series of bank mergers and consolidations, I have  worked in several locations from Lisle, Illinois to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, commuting daily from Libertyville. After the third layoff with the same bank, I left and returned to Libertyville where I am now Senior Vice Presdient at Libertyville Bank and Trust. I work excessively and in my rare free time I take care of my house and garden and ride horses one day each week.

My life has been filled with incredible experiences particularly with my husband, Mark. Maybe it was destined after first meeting each other on a flight to Paris during a college summer abroad.

Although my undergraduate degree from Purdue was in elementary education, I only taught for a short time. Being able to get an M.B.A. in 1978 from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California while working full time, meant having a very supportive husband.

My business career started in sales with United Airlines, moved into marketing positions, most notably with Wells Fargo Bank and ended as a money manager when I retired in 2002.

Right after Mark and I were married in 1971, we built a 50’ sailboat in California with a college friend. It’s a long story why we didn’t sail around the world. But after that, building a house ourselves in the California redwoods wasn’t that difficult. It was exciting that both our kitchen and bath were featured in Home magazine.

Along with travel, our life has been filled with many house projects, I guess because my husband’s avocation is carpentry. In between jobs and on weekends, we renovated a Victorian duplex in San Francisco and built a vacation home on the California coast. When a job promotion took us to Westport, Connecticut, we renovated a large 1865 colonial home there (that kitchen was also featured in Home magazine). Then we fell in love with Vermont, so we moved there in 1993 restoring a 1780 farmhouse and planting a large perennial and organic garden. Just before retiring, we designed and built a cottage on the water in Maine near Acadia National Park where we love living now.

Five years ago after spending the past 25 years vacationing in Europe two to four times a year, we bought a flat built in the 12th century in a small village in Tuscany. Last winter we had a wonderful experience of living there for five months. Besides travel, I enjoy cooking, gardening, hiking, biking, kayaking and cross country skiing.

Thirty-three years of marriage to Lynn and two great children (John, 31; Sarah, 29) are the true highlights of my life.

After leaving Glenbard West, I was privileged to receive a great education at Northwestern (B.A.) and the University of Chicago (M.B.A.). I’ve spent 35 years in the same field – healthcare management, with senior positions at some very fine hospitals: University of Wisconsin, Stanford University, St. Joseph’s (Milwaukee), and the past 19 years as President and CEO of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

My passion has been my work, and I’ve had the opportunity to help shape local and national health policy through serving as a board member and chairman of several organizations: Illinois Hospital Association, American Hospital Association, National Alliance for Health Information Technology, and the Healthcare Research & Development Institute.

On the personal side, having completed years with Boy Scouts, youth soccer and various other community activities, we now have time for international travel, our summer home in Wisconsin, and a constant struggle to lower our golf handicaps.

For the past 23 years I have lived in Southern California. In 1996 at the ripe old age of 50, I retired from the corporate world and started a dog training school. Jump Start Dog Sports now has two locations, 20 instructors, and over 450 students and 85 classes a week. I have a masters degree in social work and have enjoyed the challenges of my profession for many years! I work in international adoptions and have thoroughly enjoyed traveling with families to China for the placement of their children. I have been married for almost 25 years and we recently celebrated our son’s college graduation.

Our son also graduated from Glenbard West (class of 2000) so Glenbard has remained an important part of our lives as our son was very active in sports. My husband and I share a passion for international travel and have particularly enjoyed spending time in Scotland, France and sailing in the British Virgin Islands. We recently sold our home in Glen Ellyn and downsized like so many empty-nesters… this has given us even more freedom to spread our wings!
