I
left behind the hallowed halls of ivy and began my adult life the
very next week at Ray-Vogue Schools in downtown Chicago studying
dress design. While working as a carhop at Dog ‘N Suds in
Lombard, I finished the 2-year course in 18 months, learning that
design was not my forte. My second mistake was entering a marriage
to a Willowbrook High School ’61 graduate. He was in the Army
at the time working at the Pentagon. We live temporarily in Alexandria,
Virginia and had a wonderful time seeing all the sights that the
Washington area had to offer. The joy of my life came with the births
of my first three children. I lived to be a good MOM.
Divorce
was inevitable and after 10 years of being a mother to my husband,
I turned him loose to sow oats somewhere else. Dating at that time
was difficult, being told by one that “three kids would scare
off Santa Claus.” Two years later I married former classmate,
Bill Dunning. We had two additional children. Since he preferred
I stay home instead of working, I spent the following 20 years practicing
motherhood.
The
majority of time spent between Glenbard and the present was a merry-go-round
of activity. I have fond memories of the MOM duties that never ended…
Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader, team mom, chauffeur. We went
from scouts to soccer to football to baseball to swim team to basketball
to track to band to concerts to Sunday school and church activities
to after-school jobs – now multiply that times FIVE. By the
time the youngest was starting kindergarten, the oldest was getting
ready to enter college. We spent 21 years in ball field bleachers
of one kind or another. That time proved to pay off as later we
were rewarded with a son/athlete that played college ball taking
us to a bowl game, four Army/Navy games and a couple years of constant
weekend travel to watch him play. He graduated from West Point,
a once in a lifetime experience and remembrance for us. The others,
not to be outdone, also successfully completed college and other
professional degrees providing us an opportunity of continued pride.
Currently I travel to Richmond, Virginia and Atlanta, Georgia to
see two of them, one lives down the street from me, one daughter
is in Iraq serving as a JAG officer, and the youngest son is an
active Marine currently in San Diego, California looking forward
to deployment in March. My job as MOM has been extremely rewarding
and with pride, I thank God for the blessings he has bestowed upon
me.
Unfortunately,
although a very good father to our kids during their needy years,
Bill allowed depression and alcohol to take over his life and in
recent years has moved out of the country leaving his family behind.
My
time is now spent working to support my travel habits, traveling
to see family, cruising to the Caribbean to relax, and enjoying
life, family and especially my almost three year old grandson. I
love to work in my garden, make quilts, shop, eat out at new places;
particularly enjoyed actively remodeling the 27-year old home where
I raised the kids and look forward to evenings of babysitting an
energy driven toddler. I currently work for a team of four cardiologists
at a heart clinic but am extremely excited about a new job at a
small oil/gas office beginning in the fall.

My
family consists of two wonderful daughters, Jill and Leah, who live
in New York. I have been divorced for five years. My education hasn’t
changed since the 25th reunion – you can look it up! I have
worked in the printing industry all of my adult life and am now
in search of my second career. Any suggestions?
I
have also been a director and chairman of a credit union for the
last 10 years which has been fun and interesting.
My
hobby – I guess it borders on passion – is riding my
motorcycle. I also love spending time with my kids. And…
I guess four times on the reunion committee would qualify as a hobby
too.

| Wow!
Forty years. I attended the University of Illinois and graduated with
a degree in the teaching of Spanish and French. Amy Gosin and Barb
Widmer were sorority sisters. Married Bill in 1969. First moved to
Pittsburgh – ugh! And then to San Jose. Our son, Michael was
born in 1971 and daughter, Karen in 1975. Bill traveled a lot for
his job so I was a stay-at-home mom and through the years have volunteered
for many different organizations. My favorites have been the women’s
final four, NHL all star game and professional tennis tournament in
the Bay Area. I’m still a Chicago Cubs even though Bill likes
the White Sox. We attend the Oakland Raiders games and enjoy all the
crazy fans. We love to travel – just celebrated our 35th anniversary
on a cruise to Scandinavia. My favorite cities are Beijing, Washington,
DC, Istanbul, Venice, Stockholm and St. Petersburg – have suitcase,
will travel. Love the Rolling Stones, can’t wait for another
tour. We’re both involved in our condo association on Maui and
hope to spend more time there when work is finished. I still play
tennis and enjoy walking and reading. |
